tile art
Tile art is often compared to mosaic but it is vastly different. Each individual tile is painstakingly hand made and created specifically for its unique position in the overall picture.
The Process
The process of creating a tile art picture starts with an idea for an image.
Images are then sketched and digitised. Once the image is on the computer, each individual tile is planned.
A template of the layout is printed and each tile painstakingly hand-cut to size. A design is then either stamped onto the tile, or hand carved.
Each of the small tiles are then bisque fired, hand painted and finally glaze fired.
The tiles are then placed on a flat surface and viewed to ensure there are no glaring colour differences or tiles that look out of place. If there are any that do not look right those individual tiles are withdrawn and remade.
Once the overall image is acceptable, each tile is individually glued to the hardwood with a silicone glue, and grouted into place.
